Sanford Fisher was born on the Gordon First Nation, near Punnichy in southeast Saskatchewan, in 1927.
Representational oil painter Sanford Fisher's portraits and scenes are marked by a distinctive use of colour and a sureness of technique which placed him among the most distinguished Cree painters of his generation. This achievement is all the more remarkable considering that a train accident in 1972 forced the amputation of Fisher's left painting hand, burdening the artist with the arduous challenge of relearning his famed technique with his right hand.
Entirely self-taught, Fisher was a popular and prolific prairie artist, often painting scenes from his early life on the reserve and its surrounding landscape, long after he himself had relocated to Regina, Saskatchewan. Sanford Fisher died in 1988, in Regina.
